Approximately 20 years ago, I had my first set of braces taken off. Over the years, my teeth didn't move too much, but I was never really satisfied with my bite -- my top front teeth stuck out (and felt like they might eventually point straight out) and didn't seem to align with the bottom teeth and I had a characteristic "gummy smile." But, I was willing to ignore that. I had a harder time ignoring the headaches and jaw aches/popping that started when I was 9-years-old and continued even after my braces were taken off. I never realized the two might be related until someone mentioned it a few years ago.
Fast forward to 2006. I went to the orthodontist to see if I could get a quick fix, hoping invisalign or something else less-noticeable than braces might help the problem. That's when I learned for the first time (after getting two separate opinions) that I needed braces and jaw surgery. As it turns out, as I aged my jaw didn't develop like it should, resulting in a poorly-aligned bite, headaches and jaw pain. My teeth only barely touch on the right side and don't touch at all anywhere else; I have a huge gap between my top and bottom teeth in the front; and I can't close my mouth without serious effort. Why my childhood orthodontist didn't figure this problem out 20 years ago still shocks me (it seems pretty obvious from the x-rays). But, that's what happens when you live in a small town, I guess.
Anyhow, for several reasons (not the least of which being the fear of wearing braces as an adult and going through jaw surgery), I didn't follow through on the process right away. It took me three years to finally break down and do it. After wearing a splint for a few months and meeting with/getting approval from the surgeon, I finally got my braces on last month. Needless to say, I hated them the first week and wanted to run back to my orthodontist to have them taken off. But, I'm starting to get used to them and sometimes even forget they're there . . . I just hope they're off before I get too used to them. Anyhow, like many before me, I'll post updates on this blog as I go through the process and hope it will help others as much as the blogs I read before starting this process helped me (and continue to do so!).
Thanks again to all the bloggers whose words encouraged me to do what I know I needed to do but had a hard time admitting on my own!

Hi Shaye -
ReplyDeleteI have a very similar story...just got braces in May. If you don't mind me asking, what was the spint's purpose before the braces?
Cheers,
Brent
Hi Brent,
ReplyDeleteComforting to know there's someone else going through this around the same time . . . misery loves company, I guess? My orthodontist explained to me that the splint was to get my jaw muscles to relax so my jaw would fall where it's naturally supposed to go (when they did the x-rays, he saw the joints were really out of place). Apparently (and my understanding of it all is a little vague), once the bite is corrected, the jaw will naturally fall where it's supposed to and he wanted to find out where that was so he and the surgeon didn't over-correct.
How long did they tell you yours will last?
Shaye
Hi Shaye -
ReplyDeleteYou got it, misery does love company especially when it is as scary as jaw surgery. The program for me is about 1 year in braces, then surgery (probably double jaw) then another year of braces for fine tuning...right now I am only about two months into braces. I am hoping to get the surgey out of the way this year, but I don't know about that. I go see the ortho 6-22 and will ask what he thinks of possibly being ready that soon.
So, from what I can gather from your blog you started in late 09 with the splint then into braces just recently. How long in braces then to surgery?
Cheers,
Brent
hi there shaye. my name is kat and i do sympathise with you on some points and just have to empathise for the rest. i'm only nineteen and there is eleven days til i have jaw surgery. i feel fortunate to be able to have the experience now, rather than later, but i am scared witless. so good on you for having the courage now (:
ReplyDeleteThanks Kat! I wish I had done it sooner, but am glad I finally did it either way. Let me know how the surgery goes!
ReplyDeleteBrent, I started with the splint in January 2010 (got fitted for it in December 2009). He said the braces (including surgery) would hopefully be off before end of 2011 . . . fingers crossed!
I am on about the same time frame as you. I got my braces in April, and I'm hoping to have my double-jaw surgery in December. I am 38 years old and I am struggling with the whole process, but I am very much looking forward to the end result. It is my 3rd time in braces, so this time I want to make sure it is completely taken care of. Thanks for sharing your journey - it does help to know there are others going through this.
